Texas Storm Insurance Should Cover Damage to your Home
Over the last week, the State of Texas has been blanketed in snow and frigid weather. Even coastal Texas, areas like Galveston and Corpus Christi, were hammered by the arctic blast. To make matters worse, the frigid temperatures took out power in much of the State for days. People everywhere have been affected, but none more so than those affected by burst pipes or other issues that forced them from their homes or apartments.
A Personal History Dealing with Storm Insurance
Back in 2008, Tylka Law Firm’s Galveston office was hit hard by Hurricane Ike. A lot of our case work was lost and property damaged, but we considered ourselves lucky. Our staff was alright, our friends and family were alive, and our office wasn’t too badly hit.
During this time, we found ourselves dealing with our storm and flood insurance company. They were very hostile when we asked for the full value of our damaged property, and it took a lot of back-and-forth to get it. We also realized that several of our clients had negative experiences with their own insurance companies, until we began to negotiate for them. Tylka Law Firm recovered a significant percentage of claims for our clients that their insurance companies initially denied.
Our Recommendations
As soon as you are safely able to enter your home:
- Take videos and photos of anything damaged. Be careful, as floors or other structures may be unstable.
- Make a list of anything damaged or lost.
- Hire a contractor to assess any structural damage. Make sure damage in the walls, such as piping, electrical, or mold growth is included in this list.
- If you had to stay at a hotel or apartment during the storm or through repairs, make sure you keep receipts.
As soon as you can, send this documentation to your storm insurance provider. With the loss and chaos after a devastating storm or flood, you should not have to fight with your insurance company, but this is likely. Unfortunately, the chance of getting a low-ball offer from an insurance agent is almost guaranteed. We can help you if your storm insurance provider is not providing adequate coverage.
